Things that make Rory tick

Rory is a designer who works at OgilvyOne London as head of design. He likes to post things that may or may not include:

music, design, photography, art, digital media, social media, film, everyday snaps, inspirations from Africa, maybe some humour, a little politics...

...and he's bound to moan sometimes.

OK, quite a lot.

A sweet mural for Valentines Day by AM Collective

To celebrate Valentine’s, we at AM Collective decided to create an interactive art piece that hails love in all its shapes and forms. On Monday 13th, we were hosted at the wall of Village Underground in Shoreditch, where we graffitied the piece. With the shape of an anatomic heart from afar and made of numerous graphic hearts from up close, the wall gives people a platform to express their love, or lack thereof. Punters are encouraged to pick a particular heart to write within them, and slowly the piece becomes a fragmented book of many stories – almost like a cubicle toilet but a tad more romantic. Just like our beloved Shoreditch.

Thanks, Airside, for making the world of design, animation and music a happier place to be. You will be sorely missed. 1998-2012 RIP.

A farewell tribute to the design agency Airside who have announced that they will close in March 2012.

Some office silliness with "The Best Cry Ever" in surround sound

We became quite obsessed with the original Best Cry Ever video that has already racked up over 30 million hits. We thought how strange it would sound if we played it on multiple computers so we tried it out and we were right.

Then last Friday, Hiten decided we should video our entire department playing it simultaneously and we should add it to YouTube as a video response.

Footage of London Fireworks on New Year's Day 2011 - absolutely breathtaking

The fireworks displays I've seen on TV in central London from the past
have all been lame and I've been glad to have missed the chaos of
getting in and out of the masses with limited transport services. Not
this one. Here is 10 minutes of sustained firework extravagance.

I reckon Boris took a big chunk of money from the cutbacks for this spectacle.

"Plaid Bench" - a nifty little custom bench design with a wonderful splash of colour.

I like the colours and the non-uniformity.

"UK-based raw edges (yael mer and shay akalay) designed 'plaid bench' as part of the bench 10 project - organized by the lollipop shoppe - during london design week 2010. the seating unit consists of three different benches: a hardwood version, a plywood bench painted white, as well as a pine construction which has been painted in bright blues and greens. each of the designs can stand alone, however, raw edges has made the three benches in such a way that they interlock into one another horizontally and vertically, creating a large rectangular platform forming a vibrant plaid pattern."

"Ben Terrett over at Noisy Decent Graphics posted some great Olympics-related work by University College Falmouth student, Alan Clarke. Sadly, the proposed posters aren't set to be part of London 2012's official communications program. If only...

Clarke's work also forms part of UCF's new graphic design BA Hons website at fromfalmouth.co.uk."

Breathtaking "Sound Sculptures" with dancing droplets of ink | Canon PIXMA by Dentsu London

Dentsu London (featured on this blog previously with light painting on the iPad) has collaborated with biochemist/photographer, Linden Gledhill for Canon’s PIXMA colour printer range. Its also great to see old friend Chris Hewitt directing this breathtaking series.

These ‘colour sculptures’ were created by stretching a balloon over a speaker to form a membrane.  A few drops of paint were then placed in the centre of the balloon and a single sharp note was played through the speaker, causing the paint to erupt for just a fraction of a second.

They experimented with different instruments, frequencies and volumes, which each had an effect on the formations.

See the process:

And the spectacular results:

Dazzling Projection Mapping in Shoreditch, London: Toyota Auris Hybrid

This projection mapping is pretty cool. I love the way the little girl is fascinated with it and goes in for a closer look.
